Track our client Alex Thomson’s journey in the Vendée Globe!

Remember Alex?

In 2015 boxChilli took on Alex Thomson as a new client, which since then has developed into an exciting and creative partnership. The professional sailor and his promotional company, 5 West, approached boxChilli in need of a website that was reflective of his exceptional career. Alex Thomson is credited as one of the best British sailors, his thirteen yearlong sponsorship with HUGO BOSS does more than prove that – the relationship being one of the longest and most coveted in sailing and sports sponsorship history. We believed we were the best company for the job and so did the 5 west team. The end result proved that we were a winning team, with the website going above and beyond the brief.

What’s he up to now?

Our client is competing in this year’s infamous Vendée Globe, which is the single handed, non-stop and unassisted race around the world, otherwise referred to as the ‘Everest’ of offshore yacht racing. Having come in 3rd place in 2013’s race, which made him the fastest Brit with a time of 80 days, 19 hours and 23 minutes, Thomson is returning this year with first place in sight. The event kicked off Sunday 6th November to a crowd of thousands and was the most watched sporting event this weekend. The event will continue into the new year, which will see the sailors tackle the distance of 26,000 nautical miles on the round trip from Les Sable D’Olonne, France.

The race tracker!

One of the (many) great aspects of the site we built for Alex is the race tracker feature; by using the information from the organisers we were able to insert a tracking feature that provides the audience live updates of the competition events. The race tracker enables followers of the Vendée Globe and Alex’s fans to track his progress throughout the duration of the event, which is currently showing him in a triumphant first place. So good luck to Alex and his team in this exciting adventure, and on their mission to become the first non-French team to win this worldwide event!
