Horizon Leisure is a local charity that runs leisure centres in Waterlooville, Havant and Guildford. With everything from gyms and swimming lessons to classes, wellbeing support, and family-friendly facilities, Horizon plays an important role in helping people of all ages stay active and connected within the community.

As the charity grew (opening a new centre in Guildford and a dedicated Wellbeing Hub near Havant), it became clear the website needed to grow with it. Horizon wanted a site that was easier to use for their internal marketing team, quicker to update and better suited to people looking for local activities or services.

Overview

BUILDING A WEBSITE THAT’S EASY TO USE FOR EVERYONE

Working together, we rebuilt the Horizon website from the ground up. The aim was simple… make it easier for people to find the right information, whether they’re booking a class, looking for opening times or just exploring what’s on offer nearby.

We used our own in-house SDK system to create a site that’s fast, mobile-friendly and easy for the Horizon marketing team to update. We added live timetable API feeds so people can see up-to-date class times without needing to call or visit, and also added simple payment tracking tools to help them keep on top of their account. Every part of the site was designed to work smoothly for all ages, with clear layouts and custom icons to guide visitors.

Horizon Leisure appointed boxChilli to transform their digital platform into something more accessible, more reliable and better aligned with the needs of their members. Built on a custom WordPress theme using PHP, HTML, SCSS and JavaScript, the site is powered by our in-house SDK, giving internal marketers and content teams full creative control without developer reliance. We restructured the site around user behaviour, with clearer navigation by location and service, in addition to adding key third-party integrations to reduce friction and increase user trust.
